NIHR Diagnostic accuracy of pulse oximeters (HTA Programme)

  Thursday, 27 Jan 2022 | Funding Deadline

The aim of the HTA Programme is to ensure that high quality research information on the clinical effectiveness, cost-effectiveness and broader impact of healthcare treatments and tests are produced in the most efficient way for those who plan, provide or receive care from NHS and social care services. The commissioned workstream invites applications in response to calls for research on specific questions which have been identified and prioritised for their importance to the NHS, patients and social care.

Pulse oximeters, which measure the level of oxygen carried by red blood cells around the body and into the vital organs, are a well-established tool within healthcare. Questions have been raised about the accuracy of pulse oximeters in detecting oxygen saturation levels in people with darker pigmentation and skin tones.

Given these concerns, the NIHR HTA Programme is accepting straight-to-stage 2 applications to research the diagnostic accuracy of pulse oximeters, with particular focus on people with darker pigmentation and skin tones, to establish the accuracy of self-administered pulse oximetry.
